Comment Icon "Dr Avram is the best dermatologist I have been to! I’ve seen other derms and he was the only one able to help me successfully clear up acne and scars I’ve struggled with for years. I’ve started laser treatment with him and it has been working very well. He makes sure to prep my skin and make it as painless as possible and sends me home with everything I need to avoid any inflammation or discomfort. The staff is also very friendly and helpful and I’ve never had to wait too long. I definitely recommend him! "

Dermatologists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the skin, hair, and nails. They are trained to identify and manage a wide range of issues, from common concerns like acne and eczema to more serious conditions like skin cancer.

While dermatologists primarily focus on medical skin problems, they are also qualified to address cosmetic concerns such as hair loss and scarring. Some dermatologists have additional training in surgical techniques, but not all dermatologists perform surgery.

As your body's largest organ, the skin plays a vital role in overall health. Issues with the skin can sometimes signal underlying medical problems. If you notice any concerning skin symptoms, it's important to consult with a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Your primary care doctor can provide a referral to a dermatologist if needed.

In general, you should schedule a dermatology appointment if you experience:

  • Sudden changes in your skin, such as rashes or discoloration
  • New moles or growths
  • Changes in the size, shape, or color of existing moles or freckles
  • Persistent skin problems like acne or eczema
  • Itching, scaling, or bleeding skin

Dermatologists can also help with cosmetic concerns, hair loss, and nail issues. Remember, early detection and treatment of skin conditions is key, so don't wait to see a dermatologist if you have any concerns.

Dermatologists are trained to diagnose and treat a vast array of skin conditions, with some of the most common being:

  • Acne
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  • Rosacea
  • Hives
  • Shingles
  • Sunburn
  • Athlete's foot
  • Skin cancer
  • Contact dermatitis

In total, dermatologists can manage over 3,000 different conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails. If you have any concerns about your skin health, seeing a dermatologist is the best way to get the care you need.

Absolutely! Dermatologists have the training and expertise to diagnose and treat hair loss, a common problem that can be caused by hormonal changes, stress, medications, underlying health issues, and other factors.

After determining the root cause of your hair loss, a dermatologist can develop a personalized treatment plan. Depending on the diagnosis, this may include topical treatments, medications, laser therapy, lifestyle changes, or a combination of approaches. For more advanced cases, hair transplantation may also be an option.

If you're in the early stages of hair loss, your dermatologist can also recommend preventive measures to slow or stop further loss. As with most conditions, early intervention is key to achieving the best possible results.

A typical dermatologist appointment begins with a thorough examination of your skin, hair, and nails, with special attention paid to any areas of concern or symptoms you may have. Your dermatologist will also ask about your medical history, current medications, and any potential triggers that could be contributing to your skin issues. If needed, they may perform diagnostic tests such as a skin biopsy. In many cases, however, a visual exam is sufficient to identify the problem.

Based on the diagnosis, your dermatologist will discuss treatment options with you and collaborate to develop a plan that meets your individual needs and goals. Depending on the condition and recommended treatment, follow-up visits may be necessary.

Your appointment is also an excellent opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your skin, hair, or nail health, even if they're unrelated to the primary reason for your visit. Your dermatologist is there to help, so don't hesitate to voice any concerns or seek clarification on your diagnosis or treatment plan.

I have been seeing Dr. Choudhury for about 20 years and have had good experience, or I would not have been going back. I make appointments by phone and specify that I want to see Dr. Choudhury. I usually go either early or late in the day (not 3-5 p.m.), and have not had waits of more than 20 minutes.
