Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by abnormally excessive sweating that occurs even when you're not hot or exercising. This excessive sweating can affect the entire body, but commonly targets the underarms, palms, feet, and face. Hyperhidrosis may lead to social anxiety, distress, and impact daily quality of life.

There are two main types of hyperhidrosis. Primary hyperhidrosis is caused by overactive eccrine sweat glands triggered by nerve signals. The exact cause is unknown, but it can be genetic. Secondary hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, is caused by an underlying condition or certain medications. Potential causes include diabetes, hot flashes, infections, thyroid issues, some cancers, and nervous system disorders. Treating the underlying condition or adjusting medication may alleviate symptoms of secondary hyperhidrosis.

Treatment options for managing primary hyperhidrosis symptoms include prescription antiperspirants, medications, surgical interventions, or nonsurgical options like Botox injections.

Botox is a widely used injectable treatment derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Although this toxin is known for causing botulism, when administered in small, controlled doses, it can effectively smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles, preventing them from contracting and forming wrinkles. The effects can last anywhere from three to twelve months, depending on the specific treatment area.

In addition to its cosmetic applications, Botox is also used to treat various medical conditions such as migraines, muscle spasms, and even excessive sweating. However, it's important to note that Botox injections should only be administered by a trained and licensed healthcare professional. While generally safe when used properly, Botox can cause side effects like pain, swelling, headaches, upset stomach, and flu-like symptoms. As with any medical or cosmetic procedure, it's crucial to consult with a qualified professional to determine if Botox is the right choice for you.

You may want to consider Botox for excessive sweating if other treatment options, like prescription antiperspirants, aren't providing adequate relief. While prescription antiperspirants are often the most convenient treatment option, Botox can be a good choice if you're still experiencing excessive sweating despite using them.

When used for excessive sweating, Botox is injected directly into the areas that sweat excessively. This helps reduce the faulty nerve signals that cause the sweat glands to become overactive.

Botox offers several benefits for individuals with hyperhidrosis, including:

  • Reduced sweating - The primary benefit of Botox treatment is its ability to significantly reduce sweating, providing relief from hyperhidrosis symptoms.
  • Minimally invasive - Unlike surgical interventions for hyperhidrosis, Botox is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that can often be completed in less than 30 minutes. While both Botox and surgery carry risks, the risks associated with Botox are generally less severe than those of invasive surgery.
  • Safe - Botox is considered a safe and effective treatment for most people. It has received FDA approval for treating underarm sweating and can be administered off-label for sweating in other body areas.
  • Infrequent treatments - Although multiple Botox treatments throughout the year may be necessary to maintain results, the effects usually last three to six months or longer. This makes treatment more convenient compared to daily options like prescription medications and antiperspirants.

It's important to note that there are also some potential downsides to consider. Botox can be expensive if not covered by insurance, and the effects are temporary. There is also a risk of side effects, although these are typically mild and dissipate within days of treatment. Be sure to weigh the pros and cons when considering Botox as a treatment for hyperhidrosis.

Botox treatments are quick, easy, and virtually painless. As an outpatient procedure, you can pop in for your appointment and return to your daily routine in no time.

Your Botox journey begins with a consultation with your healthcare provider, usually the physician who will be administering your treatment. This is your opportunity to discuss your goals, ask questions, and ensure that Botox is right for you. Your practitioner will use this information to create a personalized treatment plan.

Once you're ready to begin, your provider will carefully mark the injection sites on your skin. In some cases, a topical numbing cream may be applied to ensure your comfort. Then, using a very fine needle, your physician will precisely inject small amounts of Botox into the targeted areas.

Most patients describe the sensation as a slight pinch, and the entire process typically takes only 15-20 minutes. You may experience some slight redness or swelling immediately after, but this usually subsides quickly.

You can usually resume your normal activities immediately after treatment. Your Botox injector will provide you with post-care instructions, which may include avoiding deodorant for 24 hours after treatment, avoiding intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours, and other guidelines to help ensure optimal results.

The effects of Botox for hyperhidrosis usually begin to take effect around 2 to 4 days after treatment, with full results setting in after about a week or two. You may also notice some tenderness in the treated area and experience mild side effects in the days following treatment.

Your provider will likely want to follow up to ensure the treatment is progressing as expected. In the meantime, make sure to notify your provider of any side effects you experience. If side effects become severe or persist longer than normal, seek medical attention.

If you're satisfied with the results of your Botox treatment, talk to your provider about your treatment schedule. You can set up periodic Botox appointments to maintain your results over time and minimize your hyperhidrosis symptoms. You and your provider can determine the optimal treatment schedule based on your individual needs and the longevity of your Botox results.

Your Botox journey starts with finding a qualified, licensed medical practitioner. After selecting your provider, you'll book a consultation to kick things off. At this initial visit, your provider will carefully examine your skin, discuss your goals and concerns, and review your health history. They'll use these details to assess whether Botox is a good fit for you and develop a personalized plan to help you achieve the results you desire. It's the first exciting step toward refreshed, more youthful-looking skin!

Botox - Masseter / TMJ / Jaw
I had an initial consultation with Stella for botox injections for severe TMJ and I found her to be highly knowledgable and very thorough in her assessment/recommendations. I didn't get the injections as I reside in Cali and my insurance approved coverage there JUST before this consultation, but I could tell that Stella is very skilled and would have been thrilled with the results. Highly recommend!

Today was my first visit here. And everyone was amazing! Although the doctor was running a little late and there was a problem on their end accepting Groupons, the staff was incredibly accommodating, and went and went above and beyond to remedy the situation. Junie, especially was extraordinarily helpful and provided top notch customer service. And her beautiful personality was also such an added bonus to the entire experience. The receptionist was so sweet, extremely professional and also excellent at her job. And the doctor did a wonderful job and provided excellent knowledge as well as a very painless technique. Definitely will be going back, and very happy to find this place that also had easy and plentiful street parking.
