Botox is an injectable toxin that is often used to smooth wrinkles as a cosmetic procedure. Interestingly, Botox is produced with the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which is the same toxin that causes botulism. Used in small amounts, Botox can help prevent facial muscles from moving for a period of time, which helps to improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Depending on the treatment, the effects of Botox can last anywhere from three to twelve months.

Botox injections are not limited to cosmetic procedures. Botox is also sometimes used to treat medical conditions like migraines, spasms and excessive sweating. It's important to note that Botox injections should only be administered by a health care professional. While Botox is generally safe when properly administered, potential side effects may occur. Common side effects include pain and swelling at the injection site. Less common side effects include headache, upset stomach and flu-like symptoms. Like any medical or cosmetic procedure, it's important to consult with a professional about your eligibility for Botox treatment.

The decision to get Botox will depend on your reason for getting the treatment. If you're getting Botox for aesthetic reasons, it is a personal decision. Botox isn't suitable for everyone, but you can get a consultation for Botox if you are over the age of 18 and don't have health conditions that would make you ineligible for treatment.

While you can get Botox as early as 18, that isn't necessarily the ideal age to get treatment. The best time to start Botox is usually in your late 20s or early 30s when fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear on the face. Botox is especially effective for forehead lines, crow's feet and frown lines.

Ultimately, the decision to get Botox is yours. Make sure to consult with your Botox specialist or your health care provider to determine if Botox is right for you.

Botox injections offer a range of benefits. Some of the notable benefits of Botox include:

  • Improved appearance of wrinkles and fine lines — As a cosmetic procedure, Botox is ideal for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. Patients can enhance their natural beauty by softening forehead lines, crow's feet and frown lines.
  • Preventative benefits — Starting Botox treatments when wrinkles and fine lines start to appear may help prevent some fine lines and wrinkles from appearing and forming.
  • Nonsurgical — Botox is relatively pain-free and a minimally invasive procedure. This makes it a safe and preferred cosmetic option for patients looking to quickly improve their appearance.
  • Quick procedure — Botox treatment typically takes around 15 to 20 minutes. This makes it easy to incorporate into a busy schedule, and you can even return to work or your usual activities the same day.
  • Minimal recovery time — Unlike surgical procedures, Botox requires little to no recovery time. While you have post-care instructions to maximize your results, they are fairly easy to follow and don't interfere with daily life.
  • Medical benefits — Beyond cosmetic use, Botox can be used to help treat certain medical conditions. Specifically, it is often used to help relieve symptoms of migraines, muscle spasms and excessive sweating.
  • Improved self-esteem — Since Botox is used to enhance your appearance, it can help boost your confidence and self-esteem.
  • Temporary results — Getting a cosmetic procedure can sometimes be intimidating since you may worry you won't be happy with the results. If you decide that Botox isn't for you or you're not satisfied with your results, the effects of the treatment aren't permanent and will fade over time.
  • Effective results for months — At the same time, Botox results typically last three to twelve months. This makes Botox a convenient option that you only have to do a few times (or less) per year to maintain your results.

Botox can be used to treat various areas of the face. Typically, multiple areas will be targeted in one session based on your unique concerns. Here are some of the most common areas of the face to get treated with cosmetic Botox:

  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Crow's feet
  • Bunny lines
  • Mouth corners
  • Frown lines
  • Sagging eyebrows
  • Smoker's lines
  • Neck bands

Botox treatments are relatively painless and minimally invasive. It is typically an outpatient procedure, so you can receive your treatment and return to normal activities shortly after.

Your Botox appointment will begin with a consultation with a health care provider, most likely your Botox physician. This consultation will determine if Botox is safe for you. It will also give you a chance to voice your concerns and the results you hope to achieve with treatment. Talking about your specific goals will help your Botox practitioner determine the best path of treatment.

After your consultation, your health care provider will get ready for your Botox treatment. Your provider will mark the injection sites on your skin. Sometimes, a topical anesthetic may be applied to the injection areas to minimize discomfort.

After preparation, your physician will inject the marked sites with a thin needle. They will administer small amounts of Botox to the designated areas. The number of injections will depend on the areas being treated. While you may experience a slight pinching feeling during the session, most patients report the process as relatively painless. Treatments will typically take about 15 to 20 minutes.

After your Botox treatment is complete, your provider will give you post-care instructions. Make sure to closely follow these instructions to maximize the effectiveness of your treatment. Keep in mind that you won't see results immediately. Results typically start appearing within one to four days, with final results taking around a week or two.

  • Avoid physical exercise — It's best to avoid exercise for about 24 hours after treatment. You should avoid strenuous exercise that would cause sweating for about 48 hours.
  • Avoid touching your face — Avoid touching and rubbing your face for 24 hours.
  • Avoid heat — Avoid exposure to heat and the sun, if possible. Also, make sure to wear sunscreen!
  • Don't lay down flat — Avoid lying down flat for four hours after treatment.
  • Avoid ibuprofen — Don't take ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medications for 48 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol — Avoid alcohol for a few days. Like anti-inflammatories, alcohol can thin the blood and affect results.
  • Avoid sleeping on the injection sites — Try not to sleep on the side of your face where the injections were administered for treatment.
  • Avoid makeup immediately after treatment — Try to avoid makeup and skincare for 24 hours or until redness subsides. While minimal makeup is ok, it's best to minimize putting pressure on your face and touching it.
  • Follow your provider's instructions — As always, make sure to follow any post-care instructions your health care professional provides.

I’ve been coming to see Boris for almost a year-he is fabulous!! He doesn’t try to “sell me” on products or injections that I don’t need and explains why he makes the recommendations he does. After a treatment, when I return to work, my colleagues always comment on how rested and well I look-assuming it was because of a relaxing weekend-when in fact it’s because of the treatment! I recommend Park Slope aesthetic and Boris unequivocally!

Dr. Avshalumova saw my elderly parents for a chronic problem. They have been to 2 different dermatologists prior to that but they were not able to come up with an appropriate treatment plan or to help them. Dr. Avshalumova was able to make the correct diagnosis during their 1st visit and come up with a treatment plan that solved their health problem. Dr. Avshalumova was very professional, caring and kind. This doctor has an excellent bedside manner and truly cares about her patients. I would highly recommend her to anyone.
