Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes abnormally excessive sweating, even if you're not hot or exercising. This excessive sweating can happen all over the body, but it commonly affects the underarms, palms, feet and face. Hyperhidrosis can cause social anxiety or distress and affect daily quality of life.

There are two types of hyperhidrosis. The first is caused by nerve signals causing the eccrine sweat glands to become overactive. This is known as primary hyperhidrosis. There is no known cause for this, but it can be genetic.

Hyperhidrosis can also be caused by an underlying condition or certain medications. This is known as secondary hyperhidrosis. Some reasons for secondary hyperhidrosis include diabetes, hot flashes, infections, thyroid issues, some types of cancer and nervous system disorders. This type of hyperhidrosis may be able to be treated by addressing the underlying condition or by your provider adjusting the medication that causes the sweating.

There are numerous treatment options to attempt to curb the symptoms of primary hyperhidrosis. These treatment options may include prescription antiperspirants, prescription medications, surgical interventions or nonsurgical interventions like Botox.

Botox is a popular injectable treatment derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. While this toxin is known for causing botulism, when used in small, controlled doses, it can work wonders for smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines. The way it works is quite fascinating - Botox temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles, preventing them from contracting and creating wrinkles. The effects can last anywhere from three to twelve months, depending on the specific treatment.

But Botox isn't just a cosmetic solution. It's also used to treat various medical conditions, such as migraines, muscle spasms, and even excessive sweating. However, it's crucial to remember that Botox injections should only be administered by a trained and licensed healthcare professional. While generally safe when used properly, Botox can cause side effects like pain, swelling, headaches, upset stomach, and flu-like symptoms. As with any medical or cosmetic procedure, it's essential to consult with a qualified professional to determine if Botox is the right choice for you.

You may want to consider Botox for excessive sweating if treatment options like prescription antiperspirants aren't working. Prescription antiperspirants are typically one of the most convenient treatment options, but Botox can be a good option if you're still experiencing excessive sweating.

When Botox is used for excessive sweating, it is injected directly into the areas that excessively sweat. This helps reduce the faulty nerve signals that cause the sweat glands to be overactive.

There are quite a few benefits of getting Botox for hyperhidrosis. These benefits include:

  • Less sweating - Of course, the main benefit is that the Botox treatment can reduce sweating, giving you relief from your hyperhidrosis symptoms.
  • Noninvasive - Unlike surgical hyperhidrosis interventions, Botox is minimally invasive, outpatient and treatments can often be completed in less than 30 minutes. Surgery for hyperhidrosis comes with an array of risks. While Botox has risks as well, they're generally less severe than the risks associated with invasive surgery.
  • Safe - Botox is considered a safe and effective treatment for most people. It has been FDA-approved to treat underarm sweating. For sweating in other areas of the body, it can be administered off-label.
  • Treatments are infrequent - While you will likely need to get multiple Botox treatments throughout the year to maintain results, Botox usually lasts three to six months, sometimes longer. This makes treatment more convenient than daily treatment options like prescription medications and antiperspirants.

Of course, there are some downsides to note too. Botox can be expensive if it isn't covered by insurance and the effects are temporary. There is also a risk of side effects, though these are typically mild and dissipate within days of treatment. Make sure to weigh the pros and cons when considering Botox as a treatment for hyperhidrosis.

Botox treatments are quick, easy, and virtually painless. As an outpatient procedure, you can pop in for your appointment and be back to your daily routine in no time.

Your Botox journey begins with a consultation with your healthcare provider, usually the physician who will be administering your treatment. This is your chance to discuss your goals, ask questions, and make sure Botox is right for you. Your practitioner will use this information to create a personalized treatment plan.

Once you're ready to begin, your provider will carefully mark the injection sites on your skin. In some cases, a topical numbing cream may be applied to ensure your comfort. Then, using a very fine needle, your physician will precisely inject small amounts of Botox into the targeted areas.

Most patients describe the sensation as a slight pinch, and the entire process typically takes only 15-20 minutes. You may have some slight redness or swelling immediately after, but this usually subsides quickly.

You can usually resume your normal activities immediately after treatment. Your Botox injector will provide you with post-care instructions as well. These instructions may include notes like avoiding deodorant for 24 hours after treatment, avoiding intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours, and other instructions that will help ensure optimal results.

The effects of Botox for hyperhidrosis usually set in around 2 to 4 days after treatment, with results fully setting in around a week or two. You may also notice some tenderness in the treated area and experience some mild side effects in the days after treatment.

Your provider will likely want to follow up to make sure the treatment is progressing as expected. In the meantime, you should make sure to notify your provider about any side effects you experience. If side effects become severe or persist longer than normal, make sure to seek medical attention.

If you're happy with the results of your Botox, talk to your provider about your treatment schedule. You can set up periodic Botox appointments to make sure you maintain your results over time and minimize your hyperhidrosis symptoms. You and your provider can determine the optimal treatment schedule based on your needs and the longevity of Botox treatment.

Your Botox adventure starts with seeking out a qualified, licensed medical practitioner. After selecting your provider, you'll book a consultation to kick things off. At this first visit, your provider will carefully examine your skin, discuss your goals and concerns, and go over your health history. They'll use these details to assess whether Botox is a good fit for you and develop a personalized plan to help you achieve the results you're after. It's the first exciting step toward refreshed, more youthful-looking skin!

Today was my first visit here. And everyone was amazing! Although the doctor was running a little late and there was a problem on their end accepting Groupons, the staff was incredibly accommodating, and went and went above and beyond to remedy the situation. Junie, especially was extraordinarily helpful and provided top notch customer service. And her beautiful personality was also such an added bonus to the entire experience. The receptionist was so sweet, extremely professional and also excellent at her job. And the doctor did a wonderful job and provided excellent knowledge as well as a very painless technique. Definitely will be going back, and very happy to find this place that also had easy and plentiful street parking.

Botox - Masseter / TMJ / Jaw
I had an initial consultation with Stella for botox injections for severe TMJ and I found her to be highly knowledgable and very thorough in her assessment/recommendations. I didn't get the injections as I reside in Cali and my insurance approved coverage there JUST before this consultation, but I could tell that Stella is very skilled and would have been thrilled with the results. Highly recommend!
