My first appointment was not what I expected. I waited 1hr and 20 minutes to see the doctor which from my experience is not that bad. However, my concerns is with patient care and proper use of PPE. I first say this lady who didn’t introduce herself, she was talking to me facing the computer and her back facing me. As she spoke to me she didn’t even look at me. She was more concerned with documenting and filling out the blanks. She asked if I had allergies I said none that I know of. She requested the nurse to bring an allergy test with out discussing it with me I had one this year so I refused. I did not go for allergy testing I came for hyperthyroidism. This test was unnecessary. She then touched my leg to check for pedal edema and blood pressure without gloves without using sanitizer. I could tell the room was not as sterile as it should be with dried up coffee drips under her desk. I did not feel comfortable. Most of the patients there are elderly and my experience working as an EMT PPE Is a must not only to protect the patient but oneself. So what I experienced next was a shocker. The phlebotomist was taking blood from a lady WITHOUT gloves. I witnessed her use hand sanitizer but that is simply not enough when handling blood. Once it was my turn she prepped everything, tourniquet my arm then put hand sanitizer, dried her hands i didn’t see her reach for gloves. So I asked her to please put gloves on. She then rudely said “I know I know” I explained to her that it’s for my safety and hers. She then said something that just left me speechless. She said “no it’s for my safety” I said well it’s for both of ours. She said no I said yes and then she said no and I said yes while she’s inserting the needle. Then she said “ everyone’s a teacher I’ve been doing this many years. Makes sense though because she needs to be retaught about contamination, sterilization, infection and she also needs to be retrained. I told her no it’s just common sense. What appalled me as well is that the full, and empty urine and blood tubes are so close to each other. Not only is she handling blood but urine. She also didn’t wipe the arm rest between patients. After she was done she gave me the SAME alcohol wipe she used to clean the spot she was gonna stick the needle and told me to hold pressure, I’m so disgusted. she then said “go now bye” . I then went to the receptionist and just told her that she yanked the needle out and told me to hold pressure with no cotton ball and my hands weren’t sterile but i used my palm so ofc I’m gonna continue bleeding. My bandaid filled with blood I asked for a new bandaid and said I’d do it myself. The other receptionist helped and went back to the phlebotomist where she said “ I won’t take your blood again then I said “I’m okay with that”. All in all patient care, patient safety is not their priority. Avoid this place.
