I had full knee replacement surgery performed by Dr. Kastenbaum in January 2019. Now, 7 weeks later, I have almost full movement back, a very thin, neat scar, that will not show beneath my skirts, very little pain, no longer wear compression stockings, nor take blood thinners. I'm still doing out-patient physical therapy to get the rest of my movement back and to improve my balance (which has always been poor, since I was a young child! I recently turned 71yrs old.). The only reason I gave him a 4, not 5, is that I have not seen him since the morning before my surgery. I've saw his PA several times while in the hospital, other doctors on his team, but not Dr. Kastenbaum himself! He did speak to my daughter, after my surgery. Assured her it was "textbook". I would recommend him and Mt. Sinai West(St. Luke-Roosevelt) Hospital to anyone who wants to be treated responsibly, respectfully, carefully, professionally, and is ready to get up and start moving the same afternoon as your surgery. I truly feel that standing and walking while I was in the Recovery Room, then later that evening, walking to the Bathroom every time I had to go, sitting up in the chair the next day, also having physical and occupational therapy were important aspects of my speedy recovery.
When I met Dr. Kastenbaum 2 months prior to my surgery, he said "don't have the surgery, if you're not willing to do the p.t."! I took that to heart! I started in-home p.t. the day after I came home from the hospital (I was in for only 2 nights), continued that for 3× weekly, for 3 weeks, then switched to out-patient ...of which I'm now in my 4th week. I think 2-3 more weeks will be all I need.
P.S.....do yourself a favor. Do NOT read all the horror stories people will send you about THEIR experiences! Everyone reacts to pain, anesthesia, p.t., differently. Plus, your mental state has a lot to do with your getting better. I DO suggest you fix your home up for you with a walker, when you first come home, comfortable clothes that are easy to get into ready, and have food cooked and/or plenty take out menus ready, so you don't have to stand and cook, if you live alone.
